COPY The climate of current dance music can be cold and uninviting. The sheer pace of innovation and fearless fracturing and melding of aesthetics that define the genre can make even the most adventurous producer look like a hapless guitar god, blowing his own mind with his bold shredding of all six strings. Still, a song is a song is a song, and Portland, Oregon's Copy (Marius Libman) creates deceptively affecting songs with an oversized ear for melody and a purist's discerning palette of sounds. His thick, roiling synths evoke day-glo orange tangerine dreams. Elecrro thumps stride forward with a motorik precision as chattering hi-hats play both sides of the pulse, creating slight pushes and pulls. Still, it's Copy's bright, indellible harmonies that make for music infinitely larger than the sum of its parts. -Daniel Mitha |
